Woman Vs Woman for Tura MP Seat in Meghalaya

As one of the two Lok Sabha seats in Meghalaya has only two main woman contenders, it is now clear that Meghalaya will have a woman Member of Parliament (MP) once again.

This year, the main contest for Tura Lok Sabha constituency will be between a 28 year old sitting MP Agatha K. Sangma, a single woman from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a seasoned politician Deborah C. Marak of Indian National Congress (INC).

Last year, at 27 Agatha Sangma became the youngest MP in India and the first woman to represent Meghalaya in New Delhi when she was elected to the lower house in a bye-election of Tura Lok Sabha seat necessitated by the resignation of her father and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A. Sangma who entered the state assembly.

Meghalaya is a matrilineal society and it fits well that the state is setting an example of empowering women.

Agatha is confident of winning the election once again, however, her opponent is on attacking mode,

Deborah said, “It is not a battle between me and Agatha, but it is a fight between the misrule of Purno Sangma and me,” stated Marak while terming Agatha Sangma as a “Papa’s girl”. Coming down heavily on the former Lok Sabha Speaker for the lack of development in Garo Hills, Marak said, “The people have imposed faith on him for the past 35 years, but nothing concrete really happens on the developmental front. He has taken the people for a ride. It is time for a change, and I will bring the change.”

Marak said, “Purno Sangma was never interested in working for the overall development of Garo Hills, rather he is always interested in building a brand image.”
