A Canadian NGO - Global Youth Network is helping Mautam ‘famine’ victims in Mizoram, India. They have released the latest video produced by The Global Youth Network Production. Kindly take time to watch this video

Mautam is a rare phenomenon that happens every 49 years in cycle where bamboo, which is numerous in Mizoram state starts flowering, rats eat these bamboo flowers and with plenty of such flowers to feed themselves - the population of rats increased exponentially. Once they finished eating the bamboo flowers they start to invade crops in the fields. The number of rats are too numerous that it is difficult to contain them by pesticides or any other method. Thus, leaving no crops to harvest for farmers. Farmers are deprived of a good harvest for the next few years.

It was the root of Mizo insurgency in the previous Mautam 49 years ago:

Mizo people felt that Indian government was not doing enough and that’s how they took arms and fought India under the banner of Mizo National Front.

About the video:
As you will hear from the comments made by experts, more than 54% in the state are depending on agriculture. Meanwhile, 85,700 people (about 10%) are living below poverty line (BPL). The population of rats in Mizoram is estimated at 10 million while the population of the state is just one million.
