Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) news update

Mizoram government and Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) held an important meeting on June 10, 2008 in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram state.

You can read it the content of the meeting from DIPR Mizoram website.

Brief history of Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC):

In 1953, Hmar political body called the Hmar National Congress (HNC) was formed and it was renamed as the Hmar National Union (HNU) in December, the same year. Another Hmar political body, the Hmar Association was formed in 3 July 1986. That year itself, it was renamed the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC). The HPC demanded an autonomous district for the Hmars in Mizoram. The Mizoram Government signed an accord with the HPC in 1994. As per the accord, Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) was formed in the Hmar inhabited areas of Mizoram. The Council has its Headquarters at Sakawrdai, Mizoram.

It will be interesting to know the political dream of Hmar in Mizoram. Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) is not their demand in the beginning, let’s hope they are happy with this. We already have three autonomous district councils for ethnic tribes in Mizoram namely Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Chawngte also known as Kamalanagar for Chakma people, Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) at Siaha (Saiha) for Mara people and Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) at Lawngtlai for Lai people.

Hmar in Mizoram By Prof. Lal Dena:

In Mizoram, there are two groups of Hmars those who are completely Mizoised; and those, who are only partially assimilated by Mizo culture. The Hmars in the first category are satisfied to consider themselves Mizos. They have now totally forgotten even the Hmar language as well as their cultural ethos and values. On the other hand, the partially assimilated Hmars, while identifying themselves as Mizos, are also at the same time fully aware of their distinct identity, traditions, customs and language. This is more so among those Hmars living outside Mizoram. Even at higher secondary school level they can offer Hmar language as one of vernacular papers (now Hmar language is being processed for inclusion in the degree course also). It is among this group of partially assimilated Hmars that the search for a separate identity has gained momentum.
