One cannot locate IP addresses of Internet users in Northeast India

While tracing certain IP addresses from visitors of this site from across Northeast India, from Shillong in Meghalaya to Saiha (Siaha) in Mizoram, Kohima in Nagaland to Kolasib in Mizoram, Agartala in Tripura to Aizawl in Mizoram none of them are able to reveal their geographical locations.

Most users’ ISP is National Internet Backbone (nib – NYK) or Nicnet (CIC) whose IPs are in the series of 117.199.xxx.xxx, some starts with 164.100.xxx.xxx too, the third most popular IP addresses are 59.94.xxx.xxx series.

If you search these IP addresses, you will end up somewhere in Maharashtra, Rajasthan or elsewhere in Western part of India. Akola, Maharashtra is one of the most popular pointers for these IP addresses.

I assume that due to the sensitivity of the region, perhaps the internet service providers do not want to assign IP addresses that will be easily traceable to certain geographical locations in Northeast India.

I respect the privacy of all the visitors to this blog, I hope I do not intrude into your privacy by revealing the the initials of the IP addresses above. Kindly leave comment should you have any problem.

Interesting! Very interesting post indeed. What about ip scramblers? If someone is using that from the North-east, does that make it even more difficult to trace the ip address?

Hi Sandmand, I also find that the IP addresses of certain users keep changing, meaning their IP addresses are dynamically changing just like spammers who use certain tool to make this happen and they keep spamming websites with different IP addresses if one IP is banned. Perhaps they are using IP scramblers or otherwise, the ISPs have deliberately assigned IPs of Northeast to point somewhere in Western India for security reasons.

For the providers it is never difficult to trace these IP addresses since they are the ones who assigned them; if the defence or internet security concerned wanted to get the info. of users from this region they can always get it. However, it is difficult for someone like us website owners to trace these users by using IP locators like this http://www.geobytes.com/ipLocator.htm. It will only reveal where their IPs are pointed.

However, the users from those places can check their IP addresses using the above locator (link provided) where they are actually pointed now.

Such locators are again useless for people like us… long time ago when I use to trace the ip address of those who leave comments on my blog etc, people from call centers in B’lore like AOL, Convergys etc show the ip address of their head office in USA!!! Of course like you said, if the Government trace them, they can always get the details they want, but for us, our tracing capability unfortunately stops at the US office :-(

@Sandman, very true. When the IPs of those few people who are working in BPO pointed to their offices elsewhere is still understandable. But when the whole region’s IP addresses irrespective of BPO offices’ ones or not, it is a little frustrating. This is just to make that point.
