NTPC to set up 460 MW hydel project in Mizoram

Finally, something constructive and good for our people and  future generation is coming up in our state.

The Hindu Newspaper reported that,

Guwahati: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has signed an agreement with the Mizoram government for execution of 460 mega watt Kolodyne Stage II Hydro Electric Project on the Kolodyne river in Siaha(Saiha) and Lawngtlai districts of Mizoram. (Source: Hindu, via Misual.com)

How?

The NTPC shall execute the project on Build, Own, Operate and Maintain basis.

When will the project begins?

Project construction activities will start within six months.

How much electric power is being generated in Mizoram at the moment?

Now, Mizoram generates 22 mega watts of electricity, of which 16 mega watts is generated by diesel generators and six mega watts by mini and micro projects.

Mizoram politicians are waking up too late or they deliberately ignore Chhimtuipui (River Kaladan/Kolodyne) for such projects in the past? This is the biggest river in Mizoram and it has a huge potential for such project, but it has been overlooked in the past. Other smaller rivers in the northern part of the state have been considered for such projects but they are not yielding enough electricity.

A Mara visionary Peter Richard (L), who grew up at the house of Pioneer Missionaries to Mara people, had such plan long time ago, but he didn’t have the support of the state government. If River Kaladan had been utilized from the past, we shouldn’t be importing electric power from other states.

Without electricity, no wonder we are lacking behind all other states.

Finally, this is a very welcome step taken by the government at the centre, we hope the state government too has a role in this.

@maradawnga, couldn’t agree more. We need this badly. This way Samaw.com could be updated from Siaha/Saiha itself… :)

Let’s hope they will execute the project in 6 months.

As a native of the state of Mizoram, this is one of the saddest chapter of our short History for me. This Project could have been done under the state sector, so that this Project will be employment and money generating asset for the State. It is really sad to see that all the major profit from this Project will forever be lost by the state. Hydroelectric Electricity is the only hope for the economic prosperity of this wonderful state. Now, the biggest asset of the state is essentially gone ( NTPC will be the new owner)

Inview of many a project having miserably failed, it is doubtful if this one too would become a reality
