NCR Gurgaon DLF to get wi-fi connectivity

Cyber City To Get It First, Later Residents To Enjoy Benefit ..

Gurgaon: Residents of DLF City in new Gurgaon may shortly look forward to surfing on their laptops. Entire residential and commercial areas in these parts will be among the first sub-cities to be equipped with wi-fi connectivity in the next few months.

A S Minocha, chairman of DLF Commercial Development Ltd, Said that initially the facility will be made available in the DLF Cyber City spreading over 125 acres. ‘‘This is the first ever project of its kind since the facility will be made available to all those who have offices on rent,’’ he said. ‘‘Within the next one week, we will be finalising the deal with two major US companies in the business. Once wi-fi connectivity becomes operational, we will provide this facility to the residents. The users would have to pay a nominal charge for this facility.’’

Minocha said that this connectivity would be made available to all the existing buildings in Cyber City, spread over DLF-II and DLF-III, which houses major IT companies and BPOs besides corporate offices. He added that at a later stage, routers would be installed at residential colonies and people living in proximity of that access point would get automatic connectivity. This means that within the next few months people living in the DLF city will no longer need wire connectivity to access Internet services. Any person with a wi-fi enabled device such as a PC, cell phone or PDA can connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point.

In April last year, the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) joined with the public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and two private telecom providers to create India’s first public wi-fi Internet access zone. Early this month, there were reports of the Bangalore railway station becoming the first of its kind to be equipped with wi-fi connectivity by August this year.

‘‘With times changing and technology playing an important role in our daily lives, getting this facility is almost a necessity for residents of Gurgaon. We hope this will bring about a virtual revolution in the locality which will be followed by other parts of the country,’’ said DLF City RWA secretary general Sudir Kapoor.
