Quote from NewX report:
The Brus, a tribe from Mizoram, fled the state in the wake of inter-community violence. Some 35,000 of them are now stranded in six camps in North Tripura. Our correspondent Ratnadip Choudhury traveled to these camps to understand why the government has done nothing for them for nearly 13 years.

why both state and union government unable to step the repatriation with a sufficiant compensation? as the bru costitudes the second most populous tribe in mizoram, they should provide Autonomous district council within mizoram as per their demand so that ethnic conflicts within mizoram and the socio economic and education of the bru community could be uplift. and i am very grateful to Mr.Suhas Chakma who have couragously bring forward to the hiuden facts againts bru people and further i requested him not to loss his courage and expect that he would sincerely does his duty as per the responsibilities place over him. once more Mr.Elvis Chorkhy should carry out his duty selflessly, he always in support of mizoram lead a life of uncertainty for reang community. and i would like to comment that all the leaders of the bru should work unitedly and co operatively so that the present problems of divident and negligence could be disappear and all the nation could come forward to support the reang demands. the refugees leaders always temted by a huge money received from the collection, that lead the greediness and selfishness, hence they always fall back the demand. for i am once again sincerely thanks to mr.Suhas chakma for back up bru community and exposed their needs and problems of reang comminity before the government of india and i would like to say that he would tirelessly expose the facts in near future too. thanks to Mr.Suhas Chakma.

Hi Bruso Yakcho, Brus do not constitute the second most populous tribe in Mizoram. Kindly get the facts right. The biggest minorities are are follows:
1. Chakma – over 70,000.
2. Lai/Pawi – Over 50,000
3. Mara/Lakher – Over 45,000.
4. Bru/Reang – Over 30,000 (the latest counting done by Mizoram Brus Displaced Forum in regufee camps in Tripura lead by Elvis Chorkhy, plus those have already settled in Mizoram).
5. Hmar – Over 20,000, etc, etc.

Also, Autonomous district council can be given to people who lives in contiguous area where they must also form majority; these basics are against the Brus. Meaning, they are scattered here and there. This is the reason why many Chakmas in Mizoram who live outside the contiguous Chakma Autonomous District COuncil (CADC) cannot be governed by their ADC as well. In fact, only half of the Chakmas live in Chakma ADC in Mizoram.
Having said, that I completely support the peaceful resettlement of the Bru refugees. All the citizens of India in Mizoram should be able to enjoy the constitutional rights given to them by the motherland. Let’s hope it works out this time.

HThere are more than 96,000 thousand bru community located in mizoram but government of mizoram do not make value and a large number of their voter list were deleted in the communual conflicts in 1997. hence today you counted only 30,000 thousands. if yourselves count their population, you will find that the Bru population in mizoram would over 96,000 thousands. indeed, the bru are dominated in the district of mamit that their population is more than any other tribe except mizo. and even it is also outnumbered in kolasib district too. the scattered and nomads types of the bru will found in the chhimtuipui district. so mr.cow boy your comment is completely wrong of figuring minorities in mizoram. let me say one more things that the bru and mizo were very closely relation since in the very beginning of the freedom fighting in mizoram, helping mnf to hide in the village, feed and shelter too. when the introspect of the history of mizoram there are a number of joining hand could be find. in that cause the bru also has atleast socio economic empowerment within mizoram has to be done. and i hope as the Bru and Mizo are like brother and sister living together in the same roof, they should share any opportunities and work together for maintaining a good relationship forever. and i expect that you and me can joint hand in hand to make a good relationship to flourish and maintaining a good understanding between mizos and bru community, so that it will be reveal the christian state in india. i hope you will tell a good and relevant sources of knowledge from your experiance. thank you.

Hi John Meska, well, what an exaggeration!!! Brother, base your facts on census brother! Brus are the second largest tribal community in Tripura. And some of them are also in Mamit district of Mizoram whose number I’ve given you. If you tell the truth, people will respect you and take your words. Otherwise, you will be laughing stock brother!

Talking about MNF, not only Brus, many tribals living in close proximity with Mizos have all helped MNF, the underground group. And there were many reasons – some are due to fear of the militants, some did because they didn’t like Assam government at that time, some felt they could also gain much politically, etc, we may want to say that they did help selflessly, but the fact may not be otherwise!

Mizos are always ready to live in peace with Chakmas, Brus, etc, anyone. But if Brus started killing Mizos, such goodwill and sweet talk cannot last. It is very sad. Don’t you agree Brother John?
Mr. Elvis Chorkhy and his team made a headcount of Brus/Reang refugees in Tripura and they said they number only about 27,000. The headcount is not done by Mizos, but the Bru leaders themselves. And there are few thousands of them in Mizoram. You add up and they will number a little over 30,000. This is the fact and truth.

You said, there were 96,000 in 1996 but due to communal clash they fled somewhere. Are they not the same people who are now languishing in the refugee camps in Tripura. The headcount by Bru leaders say they number less than 30,000? How can 60,000 people disappeared? Do make some sense brother! Various media reports have been saying that 35,000 Brus are in 6 refugee camps in Tripura. But in reality, no census was taken. They just estimate the figure and say this much, that much. The real headcount tells a different story.

No doubt, Brus are much in Tripura as the following figures indicate, but not in Mizoram. They were and are never the second largest minority in Mizoram, but yes, they do make up one in Tripura:

According to census of India, in 1971 the Riang/reang/brus were the second largest of the scheduled tribes in Tripura. There were 64,722 people counted in the Riang tribe in Tripura that year. In 1961 the Riang had numbered 56,597 and in 1951 they had numbered 8,471. According to the 2001 census, there were 165,103 Reang in Tripura.

By the way, personally, I really want Brus to live in peace and harmony with other citizens of Mizoram. I really feel sorry to see thousands of them living as a refugee in their own country. I feel really sad. People like You and I should tell the truth and promote such to prevail in the state as well. If we keep feeding false truth to our tribes, it will create hatred towards others. It must start with accepting facts and truth as they are. Then, the rest will follow. I hope you understand! See you around!

Hello! friend Cowboy, i can’t believed your comment on bru population in mizoram. in fact census in done through imitating the electoral roll of the citizen. due to lost of voter list, a large numbers of bru peoples were avoided. there are 35,700 brus staying in the relief camp and it is expected to be staying 22,000 within mizoram. Altogether there are 67,700 alone staying in the district of mamit, kolasib, Aizol, and champhai. in addition, there expected to be 3800 numbers in chhimtuipui district comprising saiha and lunglei district. altogether it is expected to be 71,500 brus are the exact citizen of mizoram. furthermore, as the brus constitudes nearly the second minorities in mizoram, they have to be empower socio-economic condition rightly. the percentage of education for brus is aroun 8% only. in viewing all these socio-economic and education status of bru, the government of mizoram should take initiative measures on socio economic empowerment for backward bru community. indeed, the day labourer of the bru should get equal wages with the Mizos. Hence, friend Cowboy if you really willing to accept the bru as the exact citizen of mizoram, you have to take iniative parts on systematic empowerment for the most backward bru community within mizoram. before two decades, it was seen as the peaceful living together between mizos and bru community intactly it exposed the real christianity state in india. after repatriation for brus is carry out successfully, it is expected from both government and the civil society to promote socio economic, culture, politics and education for backward bru community so that their status in mizoram can be little uplift within themselves. for that purpose you and other civilian should aware the humanity of the bru so that the bru people can live in mizoram restfully. i expected to get more comment from you. thank you… live long mr.Cowboy. see you soon.

Having seen all your comment, even i would like to comment on pitiful condition of bru people in refugee camp. i am very glad to hear that the last thirteen years of communual tension between mizos and Brus are going to an end without fulfilling the bru demands. but i expect from the government of mizoram that after repatriation of the brus people, the govt. would provide sufficient help and protection for the bru people. besides these, it is expect from ngos of the mizos that they also would maintain peace and harmony within the princely state of mizoram. as per my observation on the refugees children, the backdrop of education in the camp would provide qualitative education by the government of mizoram. in addition, the bru youth especially those who have passed the high school and fail would be accepted to join police force by the govt. for the degree holder would expect to get employment in mizoram so that the present economic backwardness of the brus people might be empowered. according to my opinion, Mr.Bruso commentation is almost correct that the population of the bru in mizoram is nearly 71000. and i hope the mizoram government as well as union government should take iniative steps to get out the bru from the trap of poverty which stricken since 1997. in fact the bru constitudes nearly second minorities in mizoram the government should concern on the bru demands and even the development should be implemented after the repatriation . hope is centered to union government that any kinds of development can be obtain through the help of the central govt. and the comment of cowboy made me answere many question but it should be held latter. thak you

seeing the video posted above in respect to the children and the women life of the bru refugee camp, a bucket of tears has already fallen from both of my eyes. today i can see the children playing with a nacked body without less security of thier future which made me to say the bru people as how they are still living in the subhuman condition in refugee camp. whatever it may be it is the will of God. the main reason behind the neglected condition of the bru people is lack of unity among themselves. the bru leaders always temted by the abundace of money and live in luxurious life without feeling pity among the tribe mate has shown the greediness and selfishness which produce betrayal of the constitutional rights of the bru community. the main responsible for the displacement also behind the bru leaders but atleast the mizoram government also try to uplift the socio economic and education status within mizoram so that the bru and mizo community can live in peace and harmony as it shown last two decades. and the bru leaders also selflessly work for the betterment of their community. i also thanks to mr.suhas chakma exposing the fact in a book and the video which help me to see the pitiful condition of the refugees people. but it is expect that the present poverty will be over after repatriation and the children could enjoy theit right to education when tey reach in mizoram. thank you…..

Hi Bruso, you said “altogether it is expected to be 71,500 brus are the exact citizen of mizoram.”

Well, firstly we must differentiate the electoral votes and census. If a Bru resides in undivided Chhimtuipui district, he or she should mention his/her tribe as Bru. 2001 cencus indicates none. Likewise, in other districts you’ve mentioned as well. Whereas Chakmas have not failed to mention their tribe name in the population census. Whether they are in Aizawl, Lunglei, Tlabung, Chawngte, etc, they did not shy away. If the figure given by you is to be believed, Brus do not have guts to mention their tribe name, which is quite unlikely. Therefore, I beg to differ the exaggerated figure of Brus (over 70,000) given by you. I will go with their number to be a little over 30,000. If falsehood are spread among your people, it will create hatred towards other citizens of Mizoram, and in turn they will not believe you even when you speak the truth. Regarding the number, it is very unlikely. You can go back and refer to the 1961 census also, see and compare the population with other minorities. If Brus have increased to over 90,000 by 2010 as you have mentioned earlier, it will be simply because many Brus from other states have come to the state which is unacceptable to the state government. I’m telling you unaltered fact.

Of course, I agree that our Bru brothers, the real citizens of Mizoram should be allowed to settle and enjoy the rights and privileges given to all the citizens of Mizoram, like the rest of their counterparts in the state. It pains me to see thousands of them stranded in the refugee camps. Look at the video, it is really heartbreaking stuff! See you around, bro.!

I had been in Tripura for a 1 year. it is really pathetic condition of the people(Bru Reangs). According to me there would have been improvement of those but due to some of leaders of the Bru Reang Community are involved in supporting the stronger groups rather than working for the Bru Reangs. I too know about one of the leader was kept in prison when they had gone for meeting in Aizawal, it shows that lack of security to these and pre-planned action to imprison also it shows that some support of the hands of the some leaders of Bru Reangs. But overall many are trying to help these Bru Reangs especially the Catholic Church (Holy Cross), I am very proud of it, and I hope all the leaders will try to help these Bru Reangs and also I hope that Mizo government accept and provide their basic needs which was destroyed by Mizos. But I cannot say whose mistake whether from the part of the Mizos or Bru Reang, but most important is that they forget the past and live new life.
