Mizo as one of the Chin languages: with Video

People belonging to Chin, Mizo and Kuki generally agree that they belong to one group but have not been able to come up with a common name to cover the whole people group or they have not been able to accept one name.

In Mizoram, the so-called Chin languages are considered part of Mizo, likewise Mizo (Lusei) speaking people in Chin state are also a small fraction of a much bigger Chin and they too are considered part of Chin. Perhaps, the video below is one of the proofs:

(Pu Zonunmawia Tlaute of Mizo Christian Fellowship was speaking at Joint Chin Christian Fellowship held by nine Chin Churches in Indianapolis, Indiana state, USA. ) Source: ChinChristianFellowship of Indiana.

He said, “Chin tawng zingah tawng ka thiam ber ka rawn hmang anga..” and he spoke in Mizo.

He repeated, “.. Kan chin tawng zingah ka tawng thiam ber ka rawn hman anga…”

Translation in English will be, “I will be speaking in the language I am most fluent among Chin languages.” And he spoke in Mizo (Duhlian/Lusei).

Something like this kind of event surely promotes unity among Kuki-Chin-Mizo folks. Indeed the joint fellowship is very good and commendable.

Constructive comments are welcomed!

Disclaimer: Samaw.com does not promote nor endorse Chin to be the common name for Kuki-Chin-Mizo people. Samaw is only a curious observer!

Dear Bugerstud,

A Nation has a common language and also has legal folds to protect other languages. Germany, UK, etc all of their history has periods like where we are at now , the question is whether we want to go forward or we don’t (backwards). It is largely on the shoulders of the elders of the respective families to see this very CLEARLY cause the ones who will reap or pay will be US.

Decisions are not made just for one radical group but for the sake of the Entire Nation.

other stuffs…
I have been getting many news and wanna share since this UNITY term came up. As usual i wanna start with Hamas type of Zo which is HAKHA.

Hakha meaning of Unity…

1) Please do examine and learn how FALAM lost their CAPITAL CITY and also how ZO lost their Capital in Kalay because of the residents of Hakha Vankul . Now Falam are not trying to talk much about how they got stolen because for the sake of UNITY. just because hakha don’t like it. Hakha Unity means ???

2) The Zo elders in Burma discussed common language which was ultimately Duhlien. Hakha didn’t agree and said there will be trouble if that was made. So, it died there but majority still opts for dulien. Hakah Unity means??

3) In Malayisa there is CHRO which is to say plainly it is Hakha. Matu, Cho, etc friends told me they cheat, they lie, they deceive and won’t help us. There was a protest by 150 Zo (non hakha) from all families at the center of UNHCR office in Malaysia because CHRO wasn’t helping them. So the office in thailand told CHRO if u can’t help them we will help them. Then the Hakha (CHRO) changed his tone and it was a mistake we will help the Zo refugee ( if they didn’t they will loose name) and so the thai office said ok and left the matter to CHRO. What happen was CHRO just left the poor Zo to dry and did nth. Some the other NON HAKHA zo in malay formed another group A sth to help the refugees.

At that A sth meeting, all the families of Zo said since we don’t have common language for Burma Zo famlies we will use burmese simply because everyone can speak burmese. Then a few DRUNK RUDE hakah came in and said LAIMI LAIMI LAMI and in hakha said are u not CHIN? you have to speak LAIMI. So the whole group got amazed and angry and one ZOTUNG elder stood up and said i can speak all Zo languages (which he could) and even Hakha so can u guys speak zotung or others like me? Laimi is only hakha and so is Laihuah. He scold them and Hkaha guys went back.

Now the zo families in burma, when they talk to a Hakha guy. He will deliberately start speaking in hakha language. off course who would understand and told them back common we don’t understand your language and you also don’t understand our language so let’s talk in burma. But they would say are u not chin? so for them chin means speaking Hakha? if they do like that i wonder how long their Hakha village is gonna stand.
Hakha unity means?

Ex Burma Leader NAY WIN gave a remark to his generals during a meeting. ” YUU YIN VAN KUL LO YUU SAN PAR”. He told his generals if u are gonna go crazy do it like VANKUL. He told this after he gave Vankul got what he opt for Capital City of East Zoram, HAKHA Village. The other Zo leader Khin Za Mung otp for Kalay. Look for Vumson book review of Chin Identity.

Thanks Martin

Dear Martin, your analysis is sometimes not very accurate. A nation may or may not have a common language, it can even have two or three dominant languages. Unity is always possible without assimilation.

As far as a common or official language of Chin state goes, Teddim, Falam and Hakha people always fight for their respective dialects. And according to the number Hakhas though they are less in terms of native speaker have the most number of speakers when it comes to those who speak it as the second language. Hence they are likely to win.

For you to suggest that Duhlian to be the common language of Chin state was never given a serious thought because the speaker numbers only about 12,500 (2007) in Chin state. Whereas Hakha-Thlantlang will number 5 or 6 times of the Luseis (Mizo), even Lautus are as many as the Mizos. Duhlian speakers are just a small minority just like any other brethren.

Insisting on one language as a common language does not necessarily be a way to unity. People in south of the state hardly speak any of the languages we are discussing right now. They are very much part of the big family. Asho Chin, K’Cho, Daai, etc.

Meanwhile, Hakhas are expanding their influence with setting up schools and theological colleges in southern areas where they are teaching Hakha dialect as well.

As a result, except the southern-most Chins like Asho Chin, K’Cho, Daai, etc. and northern Chins like Teddim, Simte, Zou, etc, most in the central Chin state speak Hakha-Thlantlang dialect or at least they have a working knowledge of the language. This include Zophei and Zotung, these two have Zo in their names but they do not speak Zou nor Teddim, they speak Hakha, Maras in Thlantlang township more or less speak Hakha as well, few in Matu Township and Paletwa also speak. Hakhas have a much bigger influence to the Chins as a whole than any other Chin brethren. This is a fact. However, making Hakha as an official language is not a wise idea either. Every languages can be treated equal.

Dear Martin,

You are afraid of facing the reality. I spoke the truth, nothing but the truth. I am not a Hakha. If you are afraid of the truth, who can help you! You call me a fool? That only displays your character not mine.

Dear Martin and Steven.
I really appriciate your concern for Chin people. However, I would like to say that both of you need to have broader mind coz ur so focusinig on the Chin state and not for the Chin People. It seems that both of you have totally forgotten the Chin people in Kalay-Kabaw Valley. It is always suggestive, if we want unity, to include every one then reallity will be clearly seen clearly but not through comment.

Dear James,

thanks for your comment. I think you have misjudged me or i have put myself into that position.

I don’t give a shit what the BURMESE gov calls the state. Chin state is a burmese term for the Name and also for the limited artificial boundaries. Zo/Cho/Sho population can be seen everywhere in west of irrawddy in kalay, kabaw valleys, rakhine state, and other states too. Chin state is a wrong name and also doesn’t represent the whole Zo population in whole even for inside Burma. That is the same case with Karens, Shans, Mon and kachins. This is just he work of Burmese we take the lands you keep the boder mountains.

The Burmese Gov donen’t allow the ethnics to celebrate National days such as Shan national days or Rakhine nationaldays but except Shan Sate day and rakhine state day that is also for other ethnics. Chin state day can only represent the Zos living in Chin state and not the whole population.

Civilization flourshes in Delta regions as the saying goes and weak people flees to the mountain for hide and cover as is the nature concept of human conflict. Giants dominates the plains weaks hide in the hills. nothing wrong with this just human nature.

Kalay – Kabaw valleys were ours in terms of History and still ours with the HUGE inhabitants of Zo population and will be ours with the floursing and increasing of Zo migration and population increase in the place.

I really hoped we sucessed years ago when our Zo elder Khin Za Mung asked Gen Nay Win to make Kalay our Capital City. IF it not was for that STUPID PIECE OF SHIT hakha LAIMI (insolent)dissident Van Kul, we would not be where we are now STUCK in the hills.

Whether we own kalay is not for the Burmese to say or give but our RIGHTS to take it as our OWN. Shans ruled kalay, burmese rule kalay, now WE ZO who has always been the inhabitants of this region from time to time to make a lasting dominant ethnic in this region. Kalay City = the whole regions of the west chindwin river.

I am all for Kalay, and wants to encourage all other Zo families to help progress the Zo influence on that regions as Lusei are doing.

We Desperalty Need a Geographic Impotance Place like Kalay as our Capital of East Zoram and i am sure Zo elders are again opting for that since they want progress for their people.

this is not a rocket science experiment it is very easy to undersatnd.

Thanks
Martin
