Mawta Famine Relief Committee website launched
Mawta Famine Relief Committee (MFRC) was formed in response to the Mawta Famine that has swept Chin state in Western Myanmar (bordering Mizoram and Manipur states of India) due to an extra-ordinary phenomenon called Mawta also known as Mautam, Mautaam, etc.
Mawta is a Mara word for famine related to bamboo flowering, a rare phenomenon that occurs once in every 50 years, when bamboo flowers, the population of rats that consumed the flowers increased rapidly; one they finished the bamboo flowers they start attacking farming fields devouring all the standing crops leaving nothing to the farmers for harvest.

Mawta phenomenon is seen mainly in Chin-Kuki-Mizo inhabited areas of Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh, two Indian states of Manipur and Mizoram, and Chin state in Myanmar; except one area which is Northeastern state of Kachin in Myanmar.
Zomi too have launched a website for the same cause, the url is www.mautaam.org

Hi! I was on your site and wanted to let you know about an upcoming show we are premiering. As you know once every 48 years, bamboo forests in northeast India go into exuberant flower. And then like clockwork, the event is invariably followed by a plague of black rats that spring from nowhere to spread destruction and famine in their wake. For the first time on film, NOVA and National Geographic capture massive rat population explosion in vivid detail not possible in 1959 when the last invasion occurred. This NOVA-National Geographic Television special exploring the mysterious origins of this natural time bomb premieres on NOVA Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 8pm ET/PT on PBS (check local listings).
In the film, the world’s foremost rat biologist, Ken Aplin of the Australian National Wildlife Collection (and National Geographic research grantee), arrives before the onset of the attack to try to understand the cause of the colossal infestation, which is steeped in local lore.
On our companion website we have several features I think you will like. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/rats/
Population Explosion
In this interactive, explore how the fruiting of a single plant—the oak tree—impacts its entire forest ecosystem.
An Evolutionary Curiosity
Daniel Janzen, one of the world’s leading tropical ecologists, muses on the mysterious evolution of the mautam in this interview.
We would like to spread the word about “RAT ATTACK,” which airs Tuesday, February 24, at 8PM ET/PT (please check local listings). I am hoping that you might be willing to help us in this endeavor. Would you be comfortable sharing this information to your members, perhaps via Web, a newsletter, or email? We would love to know if you do.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like more information or photos.
Best regards,
Karen Laverty
