India’s BrahMos: World’s fastest cruise missile test-fired
India successfully test-fired BrahMos, a supersonic cruise missile and currently the world’s fastest cruise missile on Sunday from INS Ranvir in the Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast.
BrahMos has a range of 290-km vertically, it is a supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land.
It is a product of a joint venture between India and Russia. The acronym BrahMos is perceived as the confluence of the two nations represented by two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia. It travels at speeds of Mach 2.5 to 2.8 and is the world’s fastest cruise missile.
It is about three-and-a-half times faster than the U.S.A’s subsonic Harpoon cruise missile. A hypersonic version of the missile is also presently under development (Lab Tested with 5.26 Mach Speed), according to domain-b.com website.
