In keeping with India’s growing economic prowess and its status as a major investment destination, the currency ‘Rupee’ has got a new Symbol, leaving aside the previous Rs. tag. The Union cabinet has given its seal of approval on Thursday. See the symbol below:
The new symbol as seen above is an amalgam of the Devanagari ‘Ra’ and the Roman capital ‘R’ without the stem and two parallel lines running at the top.
The Parallel lines symbolize the equal sign.
It was designed by IIT Guwahati lecturer D. Udaya Kumar. Bombay IIT post-graduate Kumar’s entry was chosen from 3,000 designs competing for the currency symbol. He will get an award of Rs 2.5 lakh.
Indian rupee joins the club of US dollar, British pound, European euro and Japanese yen that have their own symbols.
