Hnahthial.com goes online, demands district, to block NH-54

Even as the whole state is reeling under ‘Mautam’ famine, demand of a new district by Hnahthial people for Hnahthial district have intensified, they threatened to block National Highway 54 (NH-54) that will cut off South Mizoram from the rest of the state and country.

According to Hnahthial.com, a newly launched website by the Hnahthial Dist Demand Thalai Pawl (HDDTP), it says that Mizoram Cabinet isn’t giving any attention to their demand, therefore, starting next week they will block NH-54 to press their demand further; and apologize any inconvenience or hardship it may cause to the people who will be effected by this road blockage.

Who will be effected by this road blockage?
People living South Lunglei district including Lunglei town, Saiha district and Lawngtlai district. The total population of the effected area may be almost 3 lakh, that’s about one third of the state’s population.

Why are they so hopeful about getting the district?
1. It was an allegedly a poll promise of the current Chief Minister of Mizoram way back in 2002. Video proof here

2. In the video, the CM had said Lunglei District is too big for a district, if his party comes to power they will create new district for Hnahthial.

Shri Zoramthanga, the Chief Minister of Mizoram owes an explanation to the people of Mizoram why should we suffer because of this imbroglio.

Population of Hnahthial town as on 2005 (Mizoram.nic.in) : 6,808 from 1535 households
Comparing to the other smallest district headquarters
Mamit : 5,812 from 1330 households and
Lawngtlai : 15,673 from 2792 households.

Population of the biggest city in the state:
Aizawl city: 2,56,399 from 48,019 households.

Present population of Mizoram state (2008 projected) : 1,068,025( 1.07 million)

Presently there are 8 Districts in Mizoram, they are : Aizawl, Champhai, Kolasib, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Mamit, Saiha and Serchhip.
