Definitions of Lai Zo Mizo Zomi Kuki and Chin

Chhawkhlei.com user Salai Lahnim has defined the terms Lai, Zo, Mizo, Zomi, Kuki and Chin at the website.

He said that none of the terms above actually adequately defines who are commonly clubbed together under Kuki-Chin-Mizo. However, he also stated that Lais, Mizos, Zomis, etc have often use those terms to cover their bretherens who live in a contagious area spanning India, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

He also said that the most acceptable word perhaps is Chin, originating from the Chinese word ‘Jin’.

  1. LAI CHIN ZO
  2. KUKI MIZO ZOMI

The dilemma of our people is that Salai Lahnim also clubbed Mara under Lai which is not acceptable nor the truth, just like he doesn’t want to include Lais under Zomis, Maras do not accept Lai as the name of their tribe either.

We have had so many scholars who think their definitions to be the best form of defining our people. We are one irrespective of the names, but to say that one is a sub-tribe of the other is not acceptable and defies all the norms of a common sense. What do you say?

The issue of defining an acceptable nomenclature for the CHIN-KUKI-MIZO group of consanguinous tribes has unfortunately lost its momentum since later part of the last century. Unfortunately, for Mizo’s (Lushei) the issue has become irrelevant since declaration of a Mizo state. What is disturbing, therefore, is the waning of sense of oneness. The need of the hour is for every conscientous kuki, chin, mizo, lai or mara etc., to impress upon our leaders to direct their attention to this paramount issue. We are a great nation of immense potentialities waiting to be ignited. A common and acceptable nomenclature can spark off the fire of unity.

Who is this Salai Lahnim who calls the Mara people as a sub-tribe of Lai? We the Mara people are not a sub-tribe of Lai. We are Mara. Period.
