California Same-sex marriages begin, can they stop?
Gay couples across California went for their first legal marriage ceremony as soon as the local time went past 5:00pm on Monday, June 17, 2008. California Supreme Court allows homosexual marriages that comes into effect on the mentioned time and date.
The first couple to get married were longtime lesbian activists Phyllis Lyon 83, and Del Martin 87 in San Francisco, celebrity SF Mayor Gavin Newson officiated the ceremony.

LGBT community celebrated the day as something very historical while the opponent of gay marriages mourned as the black day in the history of marriage which they claim should be only between a man and a woman.

What’s ahead?
Opponents have said they’ve collected enough signatures to call for a statewide vote on a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman. The California secretary of state must verify the signatures to clear the way for a November vote on the proposed amendment. Till then same-sex couples can take advantage of the present California supreme court ruling which has become effective since yesterday.
