Bru: Reang in relief camps now stands at 40,292

.

Agartala, March 2: Ethnic violence in Mizoram’s Mammith district in November-December last year has pushed the number of Reang tribal refugees, registered at six camps in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura, from around 35,000 to 40,292.

This came to light in the state Assembly today in the course of a statement made by minister for relief and rehabilitation Joygobinda Debroy in reply to a query raised by CPM chief whip in the House, Samir Deb Sarkar.

Insight:

If 40,292 Reangs also known as Brus, from the relief camps in Tripura come back to Mizoram, they will be the fourth largest ethnic minorities in Mizoram after Chakmas, Lais and Maras. Their number will be more than those of Hmars, from Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC), Zomi (Paite), Pangkhua, Bawm, and others.
