B.K. Handique: the new Minister of DONER
Veteran Congress MP from Jorhat, Assam Shri B.K. Handique was sworn in as the new Minister of Mines and Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) along with 59 ministers which includes Agatha Sangma who is given Minister of State in the Ministry of Rural Development.

With this induction, the size of Council of Ministers went up to 79 — 34 Cabinet Ministers, 7 Ministers of State with Independent Charge and 38 Ministers of State.
Bijoy Krishna Handique 75 (born 1 December 1934) was Minister of State in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in the previous 14th Lok Sabha.
Six-term MP from Jorhat in Assam, Handique is a known Nehru-Gandhi family loyalist and a non-controversial leader who served as the minister of state for parliamentary affairs in the outgoing government.
Only son of Assam’s noted educationist late Krishna Kanta Handique, who was the first Vice Chancellor of Gauwahati University, Handique joined the Congress early in his age and became an MLA in 1972 for the first time.
According to PTI, the Handique family, which owns a number of tea gardens, is also known for their philanthropic works and contributed a large sum of money
for setting up of several higher educational institutions in Assam, including a leading girls’ college in Guwahati.
