Autonomous Gorkha Hill Council (GHC) created

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the creation of Gorkha Autonomous Hill Council in Darjeeling District of West Bengal today marking a new chapter in the history of millions of Gorkha people in India.

The government press release stated, “The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for introducing the Bills in Parliament for amending articles 244 and 332 and the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for creating an autonomous self governing Council called Gorkha Hill Council, Darjeeling (GHC) in the State of West Bengal under the Sixth Schedule.”

The Gorkha Hill Council came into existence after an agreement between the Central Government, the West Bengal Government and the Gorkha National Liberation Front in Kolkata on August 22, 1988.

Gorkha National Liberation Front has been demanding the creation of separate administrative set up for Gorkha people in the area. The creation of GHC will stabilize the violent prone and politically volatile area of West Bengal.
