Airport red tape strangles HIV+ Mizo girl’s last wish

The girl in question Mawii (Lalnunmawii) native of Venghnuai, Aizawl was not an HIV+ girl. Aizawl based newspaper The Zozam Times reported that she was suffering from a deadly Tuberculosis (TB) and she was in the last stage of the disease.

Doctors in central India including Bangalore often mistreated Mizos and other northeast people when they contacted disease like TB. In 1997, one of our very good friends contacted TB while in Bangalore and he was critically ill. The doctors in Bangalore advised our friends to admit him to a hospital and he was transferred soon to an ICU as he did not respond to any medication and treatments. Eventually they put him in a room where people are just waiting for die without hope. If it was not for his parents who came and took him home in time his fate would have been like Mawaii. But he was lucky and when he reached Mizoram, they treated him and immediately he responded well to the treatment and somehow recovers from the deadly disease.

Therefore, we seriously doubt when Times of India, CNN-IBN and other sources started reporting that she was an HIV+ girl. Unless they have medical report verified by qualified doctors they should not have announced about it to the whole world. This is really sad. It is nothing but adding a salt to the injury for the bereaved family.

Times News Network Report below:

MANGALORE/KOLKATA: A 22-year-old HIV-positive Mizo girl — counting her last breaths — tried desperately to reach home to see her parents, but airport red tape strangled her last wish. Mawii died at Kolkata airport on Tuesday after being turned away by Air India officials on Monday.

Mawii was being treated at Bangalore’s Bowring Hospital and had taken a fit-to-fly certificate from there, said former Bangalore police commissioner and ex-MP H T Sangliana. But in Kolkata, AI officials wanted another fitness certificate when she tried to catch the connecting flight to Aizawl.

“I tried to reason with the airline officials, but to no avail. I again got a medical fitness certificate and faxed it to them, but they still refused to relent,” said Sangliana.

Mawii was booked on a Kolkata-Aizawl Kingfisher flight on Tuesday, but died before she could board the plane.

This is really a sad story. Samaw.com truly sympathize with Mawii’s family. We don’t know words to express hearing this news, especially how she got infected with HIV+. Since Times News Network (TNN) reported that she was an HIV+ girl, blogs and websites around the world are abuzz with this news. We wonder if she was truly a girl living with HIV+. May her Soul rest in Peace!
