most of the asian looking people in meet are nepali’s. they been migrating to india since decades and it’s common for indians to ask “are you nepali?”. we just assume your nepalis like the rest of nepalis around the neighbourhood.

i found NE indians don’t like us asking that question. they are indians and want to be treated that way. i understand that.

but lady, like i said before, indians are used to nepali people in there neighbourhood. the NE people migration to different parts of india is just a recent phenomenon. not all us know “mongolian” and other such things.

i think instead of asking a NE dude, “are you nepali?” it would be better to ask him “where you from?”. indians will take time for that to understand.

Hi Mr. Hindu infidel, you are right. There is already prejudice in asking people if they are from Nepal or any country for that matter. I have seen many mainland Indians also got angry when we reply them with questions like, “Then, are you Bihari?” The best way to ask others will always be asking them without putting those names.

I have been living in the Delhi for several years and have never been a victim of racial discrimination whatsoever. I am from nagaland living in delhi for the past 6 yrs + and feel that the study was not accurate.

Discrimination can happen to anyone and not just people from NE.

Afterall we are all Indians and we need to accept that and not play the pity party of being victims.

actually, delhi is probably the most racist city in india. though, it’s more like bullying than racism. lot of punks in Delhi.

something like the recent events in Australia where the only type of indians who go there are nerds and hence easy prey for thugs and muggers. IMO, Indian govt. should seriously consider altering it’s visa laws so that other indians too can migrate to other countries and build a strong community. were the only country whose acting modest and sending scholars to foreign countries while nations like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam send labourers cum religious nuts who prey on indian nerds. now add local Australian rednecks to the list.

I agree with “Infidel”, we preach against hatred and protest against the Australian backlash against us – but we have just been given a taste of our own medicine. I have some friends who were from Mizo and they all happened to be girls. Yes, they are very attractive and very outgoing and very free in their interaction with men, so much so – that we tend to forget that such characteristics can be associated with an “Indian” girl. I feel sad because we shoud feel happy that we have such a rich heritage and diversity in our country that we have ethnicities that range from the pathans and sindhis of Persian and Arabic origin to the far Eastern Asian ethnicities. We should be happy to be able to interact with such diverse cultures, languages and outlooks. We are truly the richest natural amalgamate of people of the planet. Delhi should learn a little from Mumbai. It’s a little more tolerant and a little more cosmopolitan. If you ever meet a girl from Mizo, ask her to play you a little music and sing a song and kick back and listen; because along with all their other qualities – they have music in their blood.

I am unbiased in my opinion and editorializing – I come from an Airforce background and I have had the privilege of staying and interacting with people from South India, the far east and noprth east, the rajasthanis, the Delhiites and the Gwalior walas.

Go bless India and God bless our people and also our lost brothers across the western border. Jai hind

i was in delhi for 8 years and i had faced severe forms of racism the whole time. i have seen my own father racially discriminated by some locals in the capital. a very close friend from arunachal pradesh was physically molested by some local freaks. even i was about to get molested by a punjabi man in his 40′s but when i was tried confront him , he just told me ” go back to your country you chinese slut”. huh! chinese? slut?…even to this day, i can still hear those lines quite clear and loud.
i met other indians from other states during my college days , all of them thought we were either chinese or japanese. we would get tired explaining them we were indians too but sadly none of them coundnt just believe us . how come these ” slit- eyed” or “chinki -eyed” people are indians? well, thats what they thought. but yes, i met some very good people too. my best friend in my college was a bengali girl and we still keep in touch even now and the land lady of my P.G. was a very kind hearted and educated person. they saw what we were facing and advised me to go back for good. racial discrimination on a daily basis became a reality and it was too much for a girl to endure and like many other friends who too were from the north east , i went back never to return and never will i.
i still keep hearing about racist attacks on fellow north easterners in the capital even now. theres no stopping to it. there are no effective stringent anti racist laws in the country to tackle the problem . the Indian govt. doesnt care about us or our problems. i pity our fate ! the idea of India as a nation is vast but theres no room for the north east people in it yet . people from the seven states are crying out for recognition and acceptance and until that happens the concept of India as the world’s largest dremocracy will only remain a farce.
